Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 3 July 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9541, #9686, and #7072. All were built by EMD. #9541 is an EF-15 built in 1948, but #9686 is an EH-15 built in 1949; both are rated at 1,500 horsepower. #7072 is an EFS-17M built in 1956 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. These three locomotives and a 77-car mixed-cargo freight train are stopped at 3rd Street in Duncansville, awaiting orders to proceed up the New Portage Branch Line to Gallitzin and points West. Once upon a time, there were four sets of tracks at this point ~ as evidenced by the wide signal bridge. This is also where an eastbound freight train that had lost its brakes coming down the New Portage Branch Line crashed into several waiting locomotives on Sunday, 06 November 1916.

The wooden shanty with coal-burning stove is a left-over from the good old days when the New Portage Branch Line was double-tracked, and switches needed to be thrown at all hours of the day or night.

They're passing SLOPE Tower with a long string of hopper cars on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the first two units will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for their next assignment. They're serving as pushers on a freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where these three engines will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." Looks to me like this photo was taken from the last car of a moving eastbound train!
