Dismal Swamp Railroad #3 |
Description: |
Built by the Burnham, Williams & Company in October of 1902 with construction number #21040, #3 was purchased new by the Richmond Cedar Works Company for use on their Dismal Swamp Railroad subsidiary. 42" Gauge Mogul #3 would spend its entire life hauling juniper logs from inside the Great Dismal Swamp to sawmills located at Camden Mills, Virginia, and Lynch's, North Carolina. This peculiar operation existed until 1941 when the Richmond Cedar Works was reorganized as the Dismal Swamp Corporation and the logging operation and the railroad were consolidated. An agreement made with the reorganization was the discontinuing of the Dismal Swamp Railroad which was to be replaced with trucks. The final piece of steel was removed at Camden Mills, Virginia, on November 27, 1941. #3 was stored at Camden Mills, Virginia, until the early 1940s when it was scrapped. This photograph shows #3 with a train of juniper logs probably returning from the swamps in July of 1936 at Camden Mills, Virginia. Exact date is an estimate. From Don Hensley Jr. negative. |
