PRR 8671, AS-18AM, 1960
Sweetland. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in October of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8671, #8674, and #8663. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company during 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. In this context, they're serving as tail end pushers for a westbound mixed-cargo freight train that is already passing through the Allegheny Tunnel. In a matter of minutes, though, they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. In the left foreground is the link to the westbound New Portage Secondary Track.
