| 24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 November 1964. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8673, #8664, #8676, #8661, and #8669. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8673, #8676, and#8669 were built in March of 1958, while #8664 and #8661 were built in January of 1958. They're serving as tail end pushers on a 98-car iron-ore train (headed by engine #2225) on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Note that N-8 cabin car #478124 is coupled behind the last locomotive. The homes in the background line one side of Altoona's 10th Avenue. |
