Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5769 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #5769 was constructed in May of 1952. This A-A set is pulling a passenger train through the Tyrone Station on its way to Altoona and points West. The plume of white smoke visible at the right marks the location of the Westvaco paper mill in beautiful downtown Tyrone. Wave to the Fireman!

Kern. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1954. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5828 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5828 was constructed in November of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're about to pass through the Tyrone Passenger Station with a fully-loaded mineral train on its way to Enola and points East. Wave to the Engineman!

Tyrone. Here is an original photo that I took in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, on Memorial Day in 1965. Prominent here is Tyrone's World War I Memorial. Passing behind it is a 70-car mixed-cargo freight train heading up the Bald Eagle Branch. Pulling it (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7050, #9768-B, and #7176. All were built by GM-EMD. #7050 and #7176 are EFS-17M's rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7050 was built in October of 1956 but #7176 was built exactly one year later. #9768-B is an EF-15A built in January of 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. Tyrone. Here is an original photo that I took in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, on 16 April 1966. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5703 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #5703 was built in September of 1952. They're pulling a passenger train through the Tyrone Station on its way to Altoona and points West. Photo taken from the steps of the Pedestrian Overpass.

SRS. Here is an original photo that I took in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, on 11 May 1975. Shown here is Sperry Rail Service Detector Car #140, a "Doodlebug" built by the St. Louis Car Company as an R-33 subway car for the New York City Transit Authority in 1963, later acquired by SRS and modified for rail detector service. It's parked on one leg of a wye that once surrounded the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Station in Tyrone.

Revised Caption: "En route to Tyrone [via the Bald Eagle Branch] early in the morning of May 31, 1893, the Walter L. Main Circus train 'lost its brakes' and wrecked." Note the elephants at the left side of the photo ~ but the lions and tigers that escaped roamed the nearby woods until they were recaptured!
