The Depot at Fulton  Contributor's Pick!
The brick depot at Fulton MO still stands at Walnut and 10th and although the tracks are still in they are covered with weeds. The original 50-mile branch was built by the Louisiana & Missouri River RR for the Chicago & Alton in 1872 from Mexico to the Missouri River at Cedar City, placing it opposite the state capital at Jefferson City. In 1933 the line's southern 24 miles were abandoned, leaving it intact to Fulton. Since operated by the Alton and a series of other roads, the line's current owner is Ozark Valley although there hasn't been a train south of Auxvasse (12 miles north) for years. The structure is now occupied by an adjacent business and used for storage. Timetables show mixed train service as late as 1941 and "frieght service only" thereafter.
