Amtrak cafeteria-diner 8399 was originally Union Pacific lunch counter-dining car 4003, one of four such cars (4000-4003) built under ACF Lot 3813 in 1955 with a 21-seat lunch counter and four 4-seat tables. In 1960 the 4001-4003 were remodeled with a cafeteria counter and a 16-seat lounge for service on the CITY OF ST. LOUIS. The 4001 was sold to the Alaska Railroad in 1971, while the 4002 and 4003 went to Amtrak in 1974 and were remodeled into cafeteria-diners 8398 and 8399. (approximate month) |
