A trio of MoPac GE's -- B23-7 4641, U23B 4534 and B23-7 4644 -- power a westbound transfer run over the New Orleans Public Belt at the Uptown Square Shopping Center. About eight cars back are the two cabooses of ICG intermodal train No. 53, near the end of its trip from Chicago. The paved over crossing in Leake Avenue is a reminder that the shopping center was built on land once occupied by an industry that was served by rail. For over 70 years the U. S. Industrial Alcohol Co. had a plant here which distilled molasses into alcohol. |
