Description:
Rock Island NW1 701 at Blue Island, Illinois, on an unknown day in May 1943, photograph by Jack Delano, Library of Congress collection. Number 701 was built in March 1938 ( c/n 780 ), re-powered at an unknown date ( between 1957 - 1962 ) by the Rock Island with Alco Model 244 prime mover removed from an EMD re-powered Alco road switcher. The photo was captioned as follows: Switchman riding the footboard of a diesel switch engine on the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad.
