D&RGW VL-660 72 |
Description: |
D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 72 has completed the transfer of these passenger cars from the D&RGW station to the AT&SF station. The windows are being washed for the return trip to Denver behind the D&RGW's Royai Gorge. These cars represent the Colorado Springs connection of the CB&Q's Denver Zephyr. Typically this consisted of a Slumbercoach, a Reclining Seat Chair car, and either the Chuck Wagon (Buffet service) Vista-Dome and/or a Vista-Dome Reclining Seat Chair car, depending on the passenger demand. |

D&RGW VO-660 72 |
Description: |
D&RGW Baldwin VO-660 72 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Perhaps this is a mixed train, but there are no revenue passengers carried, so more correctly, this is a switching move. The D&RGW Train #1, The Royal Gorge, had arrived and dropped off the passenger cars, seen at the end of this train (the closest car is a leased/borrowed Great Northern sleeper, business was good this day). This was the Chicago Burlington & Quincy's Denver Zephyr connection between Denver and Colorado Springs. Number 72 has completed the morning switching chores at the local industries, and has coupled up to the Denver Zephyr cars, and will move them to the other side of town. For those not familiar with Colorado Springs, the southbound tracks were on the west side of town, served by the D&RGW and Rock Island depot, and about a half mile to the east was the Santa Fe depot used for the northbound rail traffic, so this switching job included turning and transferring the Denver Zephyr cars from the southbound to the northbound side of town. Number 72 will tack the passenger cars onto the rear of D&RGW Train #2, The Royal Gorge, for the return trip to Denver, where they will be cut into the waiting CB&Q Train #10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr. |

D&RGW PA1 6001 |
Description: |
D&RGW VO-660 72 and PA1 6001 at Colorado Springs, Colorado, August 20, 1964. Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The switcher will pick up the cars setout after the first dome in this photo. This is Train #1 on both the CB&Q and D&RGW. The Rio Grande's Number 1, The Royal Gorge, will cootinue west and the switcher will put the setout cars onto the back of their freight cars and drag them over to the other side of town, a true mixed train. This is how the CB&Q managed the Colorado Springs Connection. Is wsn't a bad deal; you got to ride all the way from Chicago to Colorado Springs without leaving your bedroom compartment on the train. You were assured of meal service bec`use the CB&Q pent their Chuck Wagon dome diner along on the connection from Denver to Colorado Springs. They generally switched 3-4 cars to the Rio Grande's #1 to get them moved to Colorado Springs. I had the pleasure of that trip when I was 16. Sadly, I did not get to enjoy a ride on the mixed train, but my parents indulged me enough to get a couple of photos, here's one. |
