First shot |
Description: |
I had gone up to McElhany, just south of Neosho, to get the first shots of the 2816, and start the chase from there, since Id have good road access and be able to get right to it. As with all things railroad, things oft go astray, and the 1050 departure time from Pittsburg was quite flexible. As a result, the 2816 didnt show til almost 1300. By then, what had been a sunny day had turned overcast, which it would remain the rest of the day. |

By the old switchstand |
Description: |
The 2816 rolls through Gravette, past a switchstand thats probably as old as the steamer itself, a relic from when there was a lumber yard here. As I was taking this shot, one of the Fs was throwing an alarm. Theyd stop here about ten minutes to solve the problem, which seemed to work, since it didnt recur after this. |

Here she comes!! |
Description: |
While the maintenance guys were figuring out the issue that was tripping an alarm on the wayward F unit, I moved on to Decatur to set up at a spot along Ark 59 where its next to the tracks for a short distance. This is a good morning shot, but the train would be nose lit, but "dark side" after about mid day, so I took advantage of the cloud cover to do this shot. |

Wider view |
Description: |
A wider view shows the Fs trailing the 2816 as the train approaches downtown Decatur. This would be the last time I caught him til Sallisaw. The train had been delayed enough that it was now getting into shift change time; there are several Simmons Foods chicken plants in the area, and everyone was getting out of work. I missed the light at the big plant between here and Gentry, then got stuck at the light there for a couple of changes. I was able to get within sight of the train at Siloam, but had to stop at the house to pick up my wife and restock sodas. By the time we were on our way, we missed him at Westville OK, and boogied for Sallisaw. Too bad, there were spots I wanted to shoot between Watts and Westville that would have been sweet, even in the crappy weather. |
