DNM 2-8-2 #14 - Duluth and Northern Minnesota |
Description: |
Much smaller than the massive DMIR 2-8-8-4 #227 is this Duluth & Northern Minnesota 2-8-2 Mikado #14 built by Baldwin in 1913. Its primary work was in the logging industry of Minnesota. It did run an occasional passenger train later in its work history and well as iron ore until downgraded to being in "portable" stationary boiler service. In 1974, plans were made to eventually donate it to the Lake Superior RR Museum. It actually had a starring role in the Disney movie "Iron Will." |

Description: |
With the changing light in the museum, the GN 4-4-0 #1 "William Crooks" appears dark and its brilliantly polished metalwork looks dim. The loco is anything but dim. This stands as an important piece of railroading history and its journey is fascinating to this railroad buff. Try googling it for fun! |

MSSX 0-4-0T #7, "Seven Spot" - Minnesota Steel Company |
Description: |
This "saddle tank" 0-4-0T steam locomotive was built by the H.K. Porter Company in October of 1915 for the Minnesota Steel Company. Nicknamed "7 Spot", it worked the steel company's yard moving hot metal and slag. It's last owner, US Steel Company, donated the little switcher to the Lake Superior RR Museum in 1973. It represents the many small steam switchers that were used in the iron and steel industry in Minnesota. |

SOO 4-6-2 #2719 - Soo Line RR |
Description: |
Built by ALCO-Schenectady in May of 1923, this 4-6-2 Pacific was built originally for the Wisconsin Central to run passenger service between Chicago, Duluth and Minneapolis. When the WC went bankrupt, it was sold along with others to the Soo Line. It gained fame as the loco heading up a special railfan "Farewell to Steam" trips in the late 1950's. It was finally retired and donated to the Eau Claire, WI for static display. Later a preservation group brought the loco back to working condition and it continued heading up tourist trains until 9/11/2001 drove the insurance rates out of sight. It was saved by being loaned to the Lake Superior RR Musem and the North Shore Scenic RR where it continued to pull tourist trains. In 2019, it was finally purchased by the museum and plans are to restore it to working service for future tourist trains. I hope it makes it! |
