CP 8947
Title:  CP 8947
Description:  Today marks the first day of the annual "Hub of the Wheel Trip" as my dad and I like to call it. Every year we go out to Galesburg Railroad Days in Galesburg, IL for the model train show, and some train action spread around it. Tonight we would be heading over toward Chicagoland to spend the night at the Holiday Inn in Portage. Usually we get a much earlier start, but dad had to work until 2 PM, so we ended up not getting started until around 3 PM. Interstate 69 has been undergoing some major construction in Fort Wayne, so we decided to go around town following State Roads 5 and 9. The original plan was to follow CSX up toward Northwest Indiana, but then we got the crazy idea of following the NS Chicago District up, something that we had not done in a long time. Unfortunately PSR has really ridded this line away from its action, and trains are very few and far between. Thankfully, however, we did have a NS 60P coming east. It was originally going to meet an outbound crew at South Whitley, so we decided to move further west and catch the train rolling through the small community of Sidney. Plans changed for the crew, however, as when they got by Sidney they were instructed to take the train to Dunfee. South Whitley would have been a much better place to shoot a train as the large concrete grain elevator and codeline polls still remain by the tracks, but we didnt know. The normal pair of CP GEs and a wide array of potash hoppers were in the consist of todays 60P.

IBCX 753
Title:  IBCX 753
Description:  Much to our surprise, after NS 60P we looked at ATCS and noticed an eastbound CFE train lined up across the CN at Valparaiso. We decided to head up to the ex-PRR and go sit at Plymouth, as the older PLs are being replaced with much newer Mead Electronic PL heads. We got there, and waited, and waited, and waited, and finally after about 2 hours we gave up and decided to go try to find it. We made a quick stop in Hamlet, however, to grab shots of the Starke County elevator switcher there.

CFE 5597
Title:  CFE 5597
Description:  We knew something definitely had to be up, as it does not take trains 2 hours to go from Valpo to Plymouth. Sure enough, while looking at the switcher, we saw our train about a mile further down the tracks. We drove up to it and it had been tied down for the night. Cant say Ive ever seen a train parked in this location. We had squandered most of the afternoon waiting on this train which really sucked. One of the CP units leading by the PLs would have been sick as well. Oh well, sometimes that happens.

CN 3250
Title:  CN 3250
Description:  Looking at ATCS again we noticed we did have an eastbound CN train lined up to Wellsboro. We drove up to the tiny unincorporated community of Haskells, and waited on a very slow CN A440 to take down the signals there. Not sure why it was moving so slowly. There were still some daisies in full bloom which added to the frame a bit.

CSS 804
Title:  CSS 804
Description:  We were going to go up to CSX after the CN train, but a car had gotten itself stuck on the tracks at Walkerton, which pretty much shut the Garrett Sub down. There were no more CN trains either, so we decided to head into Portage to check into our hotel. After getting some supper at McDonalds, we went back into Portage to sit at the CSX diamond between the Garrett Sub and Porter Branches. While sitting down there, we heard a westbound CSS Freight ask for permission through work limits at Burns Harbor. South Shore has been undergoing a major double tracking project, so a curfew had been set in place from 6 AM to 9 PM. So since we knew we wouldnt get a South Shore train tomorrow, we decided to head up to the Ogden Dunes station to see if we could capture it. Even though the sun had set by the time it reached us, we did end up seeing CSS AF4 heading toward Gary to do its work. A really nice way to comeback from such a lousy afternoon!

CP 8805
Title:  CP 8805
Description:  Minutes after the South Shore train, a westbound NS train showed up on the Waterlevel Route. Despite being huge, the two red GEs handled CP 231 really well. Definitely not the way we had expected to start our trip, but nonetheless, it was still a good afternoon out. Hoping tomorrow will bring us a little more action!
