AMTK 507 - Chatsworth, CA - 1/22/11
Description:
One Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" trainset per day runs from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo, avoiding the more common segment from San Diego to L.A. This is also the only trainset not made up of EMD F59PHI diesels and Alstom hi-level passenger cars. On January 22, 2011, Amtrak train #799 threads its way through the Chatsworth Rocks on its way north, with a pair of GE Dash 8-32BWH diesels (507 on the point, and 510 on the rear) and a mix of older Amfleet and Horizon Fleet cars, along with a privately owned car (painted for the Southern Pacific) just behind the lead engine. The train is just about to duck into the first of the two tunnels here, as it departs Los Angeles San Fernando Valley and enters Simi Valley.

BNSF 7574 - Fullerton Junction, Fullerton, CA - 1/22/11
Description:
Progress comes to Fullerton Junction, and the old, classic Santa Fe-style cantilever signals have given way to a new cantilever that doesnt have quite the same "railroadiness". BNSF Railway train Z-ATGLAC1-18D rounds the curve and is about to pass the Amtrak station (the old Santa Fe Surf Line to San Diego is in the foreground).

UP 7769 - Los Angeles, CA - 1/22/11
Description:
Union Pacific intermodal train ISALB 20 crosses the Los Angeles River on its way to Long Beach, California. This train ran down the UPs line along the east bank of the river before crossing, while the former Santa Fe, now Amtrak line follows the western bank of the river (note the old cantilver signal just ahead of the 7769). Along with the river, two other iconic LA landmarks are visible in this shot: The Sears building on the right, and city hall in the distance on the left.

WAMX 3514 - Ontario, CA - 2/12/11
Description:
Webb Asset Management GP35 3514 is back on the rails, a bit worse for the wear. On February 7th, the engine was involved in a collision with the Watco SW1500 that also switches (with WAMX 3514) the Ventura Foods Warehouse. Still lettered for previous owner Palouse River & Coulee City, the engine was originally Pennsylvania Railroad 2268. While the damage is not all the extensive but, at over 46 years old, I suspect that this engine has turned its last wheel in revenue service.

AMTK 145 - Los Angeles, CA - 2/20/11
Description:
Two Amtrak anniversary engines in one place! Amtrak P42 145, the first of several engines painted in "retro" schemes to celebrate the passenger carriers 40th anniversary in 2011, has just arrived in Los Angeles on its first trip to the west (on train #1, the "Sunset Limited"). On the adjacent "escape" track sits Amtrak F59PHI 457, wearing a special scheme to commemorate the "Pacific Surfliner" services 10th anniversary in 2010. Note only is this an unusual view of the 457s rear, but also note the damage to the pilot on 145, the result of a grade crossing accident in San Antonio the previous day.

Description:
Amtrak "Cabbage" 90208, seen on the rear of "Pacific Surfliner" #799 on February 20, 2011, began life as F40PH 208. When the F40PHs were retired, many were rebuilt as baggage cars that, because of the locomotive cab, could be used on the front of push-pull passenger trains. Train #799 has Dash 8-32BWH 510 on the head-end. I hope no luggage fell out of that open door!

The trackwork in Fullerton, California, has gotten more complex! Along with the triple track mainline (which ends here, with the left main continuing on to Chicago, and the right main heading south to San Diego, with the middle main splitting to each), there is a new track on the far right for the upcoming Metrolink service between Fullerton and Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo. This stub end track, complete with a short passing siding, joins the line to San Diego about a quarter mile after rounding this curve. BNSF 9615 - Fullerton Junction, Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Description:
Running 9 hours 20 minutes late as it approaches it next to last stop in Fullerton, California, Amtrak train #3 (the westbound "Southwest Chief") has had a number of setbacks on its journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. Among the problems was the addition of BNSF SD70MAC 9615 in La Junta, Colorado, because of ailing Amtrak P42DC 45 developed problems, along with slow orders through Kansas and Colorado due to signal problems (reportedly copper theft), and then setting out unit 45 in Albuqueque, New Mexico. The train was running so late at this point that a crew change was scheduled for Fullerton, with the new crew taking the train the final twenty-six miles into Los Angeles.

Southern California's Metrolink commuter train service has been in operation since 1991, and at rush hour the stations become a sea of humanity - imagine that; not everyone is stuck on the freeway! Fullerton, not far from Disneyland, sees Metrolink service between Los Angeles and southern points (Irvine, Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside) and cities to the east (Riverside) as well. Here train 706 (a Los Angeles to Riverside train) disgorges passengers at the venerable old Santa Fe station (built in 1930) right on time. In moments, the train will depart and, at the end of the platform, switch to the middle main, as the track it is on heads south to Oceanside (and eventually San Diego) rather than east to Riverside (and Chicago).

UP 3790 - Dolores Yard, Carson, CA - 3/29/11
Description:
At the north end of Union Pacific's Dolores Yard is CP Alameda, where some of the power lays over awaiting assignment. Unlike southern California's other railroad, BNSF Railway (which operates a steady stream of GE power in the area), EMD power is no stranger to the Union Pacific in the L.A. Basin. Here we see SD70M 3790 and SD90MAC 8200 resting between runs on March 29, 2011. (The UP calls these SD90MACs "SD9043AC" rather than sticking with the EMD designation.)

AMTK 90230
Description:
Each July, the horse racing season comes to San Diego Countys Del Mar Racetrack. And with it, increased ridership on Amtraks Surf Line, and to handle the increased crowds one train set of older cars is placed into service between Los Angeles and San Diego (in order to allow one train set of Pacific Surfliner cars to be broken up to lengthen other trains on the line). In 2011, former F40PH-turned-cab car 90230 (originally Amtrak 230), painted in the Pacific Northwests attractive Cascades scheme, traveled south to lend an assist. Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #583, running nearly forty minutes late (due, in large part, to longer station stops necessitated by the older cars), zips through the Metrolink station in Orange, California, on July 21, 2011.

AMTK 503
Description:
During the Del Mar Race Season, Amtraks "Pacific Surfliner" trains become a bit more interesting as one train set is made up of older equipment (in order break up one standard high-level train set in order to extend the other train sets). On July 29th, 2011, train 582 departs Fullerton, California, on its way from Los Angeles to San Diego, with F59PHI 464 on the headend, a consist of Horizon and Amfleet cars, an old "Heritage" baggage car and Dash 8-32BWH 503 on the rear. Its a nice break from the usual "Pacific Surfliner" cars for those watching trackside, but I suspect that the passengers would rather have the newer - and nicer - "Surfliner" cars in which to ride.

SCAX 638
Description:
Metrolink train 708 (Los Angeles to Riverside) makes its station stop on track 3 (the south main) at Fullerton, California, on July 29, 2011. Meanwhile, a mysterious Metrolink train, with Hyundai-Rotem cab car 638 on the rear, waits on track 2 (the middle main), which has no passenger access. (The destination boards on the cars indicated the train was headed from Los Angeles to the Antelope Valley!) No problems, though, as this train is empty save for two crewmen in the diesels cab and a crewman riding in the engineers seat in the cab car. The mystery train headed east, following train 708, but returned about five minutes later - on the same mainline - heading west. (A northbound/westbound Metrolink train was reportedly having problems in nearby Anaheim, and we assumed that train was heading there to pick up the passengers, but that was not the case.)
