CR SD40-2 6377
Title:  CR SD40-2 6377
Description:  Conrail SD40-2 6377 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Full disclosure; I marked the slide as Minneapolis, Minnesota, and I think that is in error. I shot a lot of film in Kansas City in April 1980, as a result, I did not mark everything correctly, it appears. Plus the weather was poor in KC, so I believe this photo is KC. That would explain the MKT caboose on the left. Any help appreciated.

CR SDP45 6689
Title:  CR SDP45 6689
Description:  Conrail SDP45 6689 at the MILW/SOO yard in Bensenville, Illinois on April 7, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Probably a SD45 in reality, this shows the SDP45 frame and hood that EMD used to deliver a 5000 gallon fuel tank to the Erie Lackawanna. Built in August 1970 as EL 3658 (c/n 36662) on EMD Order 7246, the extra space behind the flaired radiators never contained a steam generator. Note the lack of vents behind the radiator intakes. The units were all returned to their lessor when their lease expired in January 1984, thereby ending the SDP45's service on Conrail.

CR SDP45 6695
Title:  CR SDP45 6695
Description:  CR SDP45 6695 showing that unfortunate notch in the Fireman's side of the low hood for the brakewheel as it approaches Union Avenue interlocking in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built for the Erie Lackawanna as number 3664 in August 1970 (c/n 36882) on EMD Order 7246, it was classed as a SDP45, but was never equipped with a steam generator at the rear. The EL wanted a larger (5000 gallon) fuel tank, so EMD supplied a SDP45 frame and hood, although the rear end was beveled rather than flat. The spotting feature is the lack of vents for the steam generator section behind the flaired radiators.

Title:  CR SDP45 6699
Description:  Conrail SDP45 6699 at Bensenville, Illinois on April 7, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. If I have the story straight, the first order of Erie Lackawanna SDP45's were leased from the N&W, transferred to Conrail, and upon expiration of the lease, the units were returned to the lessor. See the comment below, thanks Sean.

CR U28C 6830
Title:  CR U28C 6830
Description:  Conrail U28C 6830 at BN's Cicero, Illinois yard on an unknown day in October 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built for the Standard Railroad of the World between September-October 1966 as Pennsylvania 6530 (c/n 36029), it was one of 15 U28C's for the PRR (#'s 6520-6534, classed GF28a), and one of 75 built by General Electric before being replaced by the U30C.

The U28C was built in two distinct Phases, Phase I utilized the U25C carbody, the significant spotting feature being the step-up in the running board at the location of the radiators at the rear of the unit, and drop equalizer trucks. The Phase II introduced a General Steel Castings truck similar in design to EMD's Flexicoil truck, and a truck of similar design referred to as the Adirondack truck. The radiators of the Phase II had a bulge on the side just above the intakes, and a walkway over the center on the roof. When Penn-Central came into existence February 1, 1968, the U28C's retained their PRR road numbers. On April 1, 1976, Conrail took over the failed PC and several other eastern railroads. To make room for SD40-2's, CR re-numbered the U28C's into the 6820-6834 series, and they lasted until retired in 1983.

Description:  Conrail GP9 7301 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The bridge in the background was the IC/ICG Saint Charles Air Line.

Number 7301 was built in April 1954 as Cleveland Union Terminal (CUT/NYC) 5701 (c/n 19522) on EMD Order 5340. It later became PC/CR 7301, then VTR 751, then SLR 1751, then SLR 58. It is seen in charge of Train Number 456, The Valpo.

The Valpo first ran for the PRR on August 30, 1869, then called the Chicago–Valparaiso Accommodation. It was also referred to as The Valpo Local or The Dummy. It passed into the hands of the PC and then the CR. Sometime in 1979 it passed into Amtrak, renamed The Calumet, and continued until 1991.

CR GP9 7391
Title:  CR GP9 7391
Description:  Conrail GP9's 7391 and 7392, and E8 4327 (DIT) heading southeast near Crown Point, Indiana on an unknown day in June 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 7391 was built in March 1956 as NYC GP9 5991 (c/n 21004) on EMD Order 5447, was renumbered to NYC 7391, then PC 7391, then CR 7391, later traded to EMD.

I was driving south on I-65 and happened to see headlights approaching from the west. I jumped off the Interstate, but by then this train had already passed me. I had to take some liberties with the local speed zones to get this photo, and even then the best I could do was get ahead a short distance, pull over and stick the camera out the window. The hogger was working his engines. A visit to Google Earth today shows that these rails have since been removed. * NOTE * Mark E left a Comment asking if I was sure this was shot in 1984. I went back and looked at the slide mounts (there are three slides in this sequence), and they are all stamped June 1982 and sequentially numbered. According to crcyc.railfan.net the E8's were all retired in January 1978, so I'll admit there is some question about the validity of the date. I do have a couple of slides of a CR E8 in Chicago commuter service dated July 1978. I was on a business trip and these are slides from my employer's camera, so they are not as carefully marked as they should be. The slide date stamp is all I can go by at this point.

CR GP9 7391
Title:  CR GP9 7391
Description:  Conrail GP9 7391 and 7392, and PC E8 4327 heading southeast near Crown Point, Indiana sometime in June 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the third shot of a sequence of three, and as you can see, it is a panning shot. I was attempting to get the photo before the truck on the right blocked my shot, and unfortunately, I got a nice photo of a road sign for my efforts. Thanks to Les Beckman for keeping me honest, I has earlier posted two photos of this train, and mentioned that I had a third shot, but never posted it because I thought the road sign wrecked the shot. Oh well, better luck next time.

CR GP35m 7635
Title:  CR GP35m 7635
Description:  Conrail GP35m 7635 at Jeffersonville, Indiana on June 16, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1965 as PRR 2363 (c/n 30380), it was retired by Conrail on February 11, 1981. However, Conrail decided that it would try rebuilding a GP35, so 2363 was pulled from the dead line and sent to Juniata and rebuilt, completed November 29, 1984. It is stencilled as GP38 and COLLINWOOD in tiny letters below the cab number. The following is from thecrhs.org:

The unit was downgraded from 2,500hp to the standard GP38 2,000hp. A paper air filter box was added behind the central air intake ahead, and the dynamic brakes were removed as evidenced by the blanking out of the blister (which was also cut short to accommodate the paper air filter). The original GP35 class lights were replaced with the FRA-approved 'bug-eyes' typically found on newer EMD locomotives. The GP35 turbocharger was removed and two more exhaust stacks were added. The experiment was determined to be not economically viable and the unit became the only such rebuilt locomotive on the system. CR GP38 7635 was finally retired on June 11, 1997.
