Tourist info |
Description: |
Quite a few communities were able to prevail upon local railroads for a caboose when they were being phased out 25 years ago. Many wound up in parks, some, such as this one, became local tourist information centers. This ex Santa Fe car was performing that task at Medicine Lodge. |

The patent number on this switchstand is just shy of 2,000,000. I wonder what year that would place it in?? Im guessing close to the turn of the century-the last one. |

Home town heritage |
Description: |
Many places make some effort to show their railroad history, whether it be a steam engine in a park, a restored station, or just some equipment on a siding. Needles had a siding full of equipment, but I was on a "geezer" tour, and didnt have time during this meal break to go check out the whole display. I was able to get this shot of a nicely painted ATSF box from the McDonalds parking lot. Oh well.... |

Stranded in the desert |
Description: |
Retired box cars make great storage units, and many have found their way off the rails and into some interesting places over the years. Seems like most of the classic cars-Santa Fe reefers come to mind-have disappeared, probably just due to age. A new fleet has come to replace them such as this Pacific Fruit Express car in reefer yellow, somewhere in the Mojave Desert, seen from a tour bus on I 40. |

Afternoon light |
Description: |
I drive past this unit often, and its such a part of the landscape that I dont always pay a lot of attention. I was stalking L 102, the Watts based dodger that works most days to Simmons in Decatur, then turns back south, working Little Debbie in Gentry on the way. The light was gorgeous, so I had to get a photo of the "stuffed and mounted" F 7 while I waited for the local to pass, itself in a red/yellow/black scheme. |

Storage unit |
Description: |
Or, how we did things before PODs. This car has been on this property as long as I can remember-Ive lived in town for 16 years-but only recently did the home owner clear off the brush to reveal enough of the car to merit a photo. Hard to tell what road it was from-the paint is faded to almost gone-but it may have been CNW. In a yard along Country Club Rd. |

Pennsy power?? |
Description: |
Doesnt look like it, but the type face on the number looks like it could be. We stopped near Mansfield for gas and a Mc Donalds tea off I 71, and saw this up on the hill behind the Mc Donalds, carrying a banner for the diner it was in front of. Any ideas on what the heritage of this engine is, please comment. |

Close up view |
Description: |
A closer view of the steam engine behind the Mc Donalds in Mansfield. The RRPA system identifies the Pennsy engine with this number as a 4-4-2, but I can clearly see there are at least six driving wheels, and it may be a 2-8-0. I suspect the number may not be the engine's actual number, or it's not a PRR engine, which I suspect is the case. The fall color in the background is absolutely authentic!! |

Yard box |
Description: |
Boxcars have been used as storage units as long as there have been box cars. This one is in a yard in Siloam Springs. Ive shot it before, from a more end-on angle. The sun was good this day for a broadside view of this ex CNW 60 foot box. Too bad the car number is eroded off. |

The end of the box car in the yard at Siloam Springs. Old corrugated steel, a classic freight car look. Of note, a previous car number appears to be partly evident at the right top of the car, and does not match the number on the side. |
