Old classic
Title:  Old classic
Description:  At one time, these 86 foot auto parts cars were all over. Now, they seem to be few and far between, though this line does not have a lot of parts traffic on it. This ex Conrail car, now with initials NYC, was in Watts on a southbound H train.

IC car
Title:  IC car
Description:  While the railroad was Illinois Central Gulf, their box cars were orange, making them easy to spot. Theyre a lot less flashy now that they are gray. This one was northbound in Siloam Springs on an H train.

Not many of these left
Title:  Not many of these left
Description:  A hand me down 86 foot auto parts box rolls south on an H train. Once a staple of the railroad auto parts business, these cars are approaching their maximum interchange life, and wont be around much longer.

Not the best angle
Title:  Not the best angle
Description:  But I didnt realize the mismatch between the initials and lettering til after it was almost too late. Its not uncommon to see initials patch painted on a car that has changed hands. What was unusual about this one is that it looks like the car and reporting marks are intentional, Nebraska-Kansas-Colorado marks, but CP painted on the car, too. Go figure.

A lot to say
Title:  A lot to say
Description:  Not only the graffit, which seems to be as pervasive on freight cars as it once was on the NY subways I rode in the 70s, but on the doors of this Railbox car on a northbound M train.

Rare find
Title:  Rare find
Description:  The Western Pacific was folded into UP in 1982, almost 40 years ago. To find one of their boxcars still rolling well into the 21st century was a find. This one was on a northbound at Mc Alester on the ex MKT. I caught it the day UP 4014 was visiting for an overnight service stop, so there were lots of daisy pickers around, hence the lack of a clear shot. Oh well....and of course, it's covered in graffiti!!

Short line car
Title:  Short line car
Description:  Theres a short line in the Arkansas River Valley that runs some industrial track in the Fort Chaffee area, and out to Barling. For a line that is only 29 miles, they have a roster of rolling stock, among them this graffitied ex-Nacional de Mexico box car that was in the southbound Q train on the KCS

Not a mark
Title:  Not a mark
Description:  This UP "minimalist" car-solid yellow, no markings except for reporting marks-was northbound on the M SHKC. How long til the vandals turn it into a canvas for graffiti??

Description:  This Santa Fe reefer was in a field off old US 66 near Adrian, Texas, about 50 miles west of Amarillo, and, ironically, adjacent to the ex Rock Choctaw Route.

Great storage shed
Title:  Great storage shed
Description:  The west seems to be littered with old box cars-whose exactly depends on what railroad was nearby-in this case, here in Pampa Tex, the Santa Fe. This weathered car was in a local industrys yard off US 60.

Open door
Title:  Open door
Description:  You usually see a box car with an open door when the car is empty, but not often a loaded car. Someone must have opened this one in transit, hoping for a mechandise jackpot. They were surely disappointed to find the load was linerboard, which, when I was a driver for JB Hunt, I recall as being shipped in 7000 pound rolls. Even if it was something you wanted, you couldnt just walk off with it!! Northbound on the 261 train. The reporting mark is UP, once upon a time, a MKT mark.
