Title:
C&NW Menasha, WI Freight House
Description:
Looking southeast at the north end of the C&NW freight house adjacent to the CN, former C&NW, Neenah-Menasha yard at Menasha, WI on 15 Oct. '16. The depot/yard office (just out of frame to the left) and this freight house were built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $15,000 and $400,000 respectively. The contractor was Consolidated Construction Co. of Appleton. The freight house is 552’ long and 50’ wide (the first 50' of this end are only about 30' wide) and could hold 11 freight cars inside. A 3,500 sq. ft. office was included on the southeast corner at Sanford St. The turnout and track leading into it, as well as some yard tracks, were torn out in Sep. 2013. I do not know if they use the entire building, but the southern portion is currently home to FRSTeam by Gunderson. The spire of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, which stands near the south end of the freight house, can be seen rising above the trees at left.

I do not know if they use the entire building, but the southern portion is currently home to FRSTeam by Gunderson. The portion of the building with the freight doors to the right is an addition, but I don't know when it was built.

CN 4705
Description:
CN local passes behind the former C&NW depot after servicing Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jul. '17. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St. to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

CN 2612, et al.
Description:
A CN unit train of tank cars approaches Merritt Ave. and parallels Broad St. as it heads south via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 28 Jan. '18. The former C&NW depot and freight house stand at left. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. Train had three locomotives, CN 2612, CN 5731, and CN 8877.

CN 5681, et al.
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Broad St. and passes the former C&NW depot as it heads north at Oshkosh, WI on 8 Jun '18. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. I used to believe that this depot replaced the older MLS&W depot which stood at Warren St. and Jay St. (both streets no longer exist but the site was southwest of the intersection of Pearl Ave. and Jackson St.), because the MLS&W was a subsidiary of the C&NW. I recently learned that both roads operated independently in Oshkosh until at least 1893, when the MLS&W was completely absorbed by the C&NW. In fact, the MLS&W also built a new stone depot in Oshkosh in 1894, to replace their older, wooden depot. Some references state, erroneously, that this depot replaced the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot. However, the C&NW operated both depots for years after this one was completed. Train had two locomotives, CN 5681 and CN 5719.

IC 3115
Description:
A CN local pauses near the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI on 9 Aug. '18. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current, gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago. Local had just finished servicing the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill and was waiting for a through freight to pass before heading back to Neenah. Train had two locomotives, IC 3115 and GTW 4927.

CN 4705
Description:
Looking down the platform of the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot reveals a CN local momentarily fouling Garfield Ave. as it works at the north end of the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. The depot was built in 1893 to replace the original ca. 1861 depot. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm, 500 N. Commercial St. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located on S. Commercial St., near Galloway Co., 601 S. Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet behind me). It was razed after the new depot was completed. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot.

Title:
CNW Clintonville, WI, Depot
Description:
The south (originally northwest) and west (originally northeast) walls of the second C&NW depot at Clintonville (originally Pigeon), WI, on 13 Sep. '20. It was constructed in the Craftsman style in 1914 at a cost of $2,500. C&NW was ordered to replace the original, ca. 1878, depot after the city lodged a complaint with the Railroad Commission of Wis. that it was inadequate for the needs of the growing community. The new depot was built in the same spot as the old depot, on the north side of the main line, about 150 ft. east of Main St. (formerly New London St.), south of 5th St. (formerly 11th St., formerly Young St.), on the north side of what would be E. 4th St. (formerly Guernsey St., formerly Dorr St.) if it extended east of Main St. The depot closed in 1976. The site is currently the parking lot on the north side of a wonderful Walgreens. The depot has been turned approximately 115 degrees counterclockwise from its original orientation and moved approximately 300 feet southeast of its original location. It is currently occupied by KerberRose CPAs.
