A different 611 |
Description: |
Long Island used modified Alco FA's to provide train hotel power, and as control cabs. They were typically on the west end of trains, making photography of them leading somewhat problematic on their morning westbound runs. This one is pulling away as the train heads through Nassau interlocking and up the Oyster Bay branch. Of note are two buildings in the background. The first, seen above the second car from the FA, is Nassau tower. The Long Island may have the most active towers of any railroad in America at this point in history. The second notable structure is the ivy covered building immediately behind the FA. It was once a power station for the LIRR electrified lines, which, in addition to the Main Line west, also included third rail to East Williston on the Oyster Bay branch, and on the line that turned south here to reach Garden City and Hempstead. It was once possible to go from Mineola to West Hempstead and Valley Stream by train. |

Nassau overhead |
Description: |
A view of Nassau tower and the switches to the Oyster Bay branch, looking down from the Mineola Blvd overpass. We see a westbound train coming off the branch behnid an FA. At one time, there was a connection from the Oyster Bay branch to a line that went down behind Franklin Av in Garden City, to the location of Garden tower, which was at that time a four way junction of the line from Mineola, the Hempstead Branch and the Mitchell Field Secondary. The line from Mineola was abaondoned and pulled up in the 1960s-I can recall very vaguely seeing Alco S types on the line on a few rare occasions in the mid 60's; the other lines remain. There is an office building at right just out of the photo. It's new since the last time I was in Mineola, about 1988. It stands where there was a connecting track from the Main Line to the line to Garden City. That track went to the right of the ivy covered building at far right. The platform you see was not extended til the 80's. |

F unit bringing up the rear |
Description: |
In the 1980s LIRR added 4 EMD Fs to the power car fleet, two former MILW units, and two from the B&O. One of the ex Milwaukee units is on the rear of an Oyster Bay train at the Albertson station. Note the bow wave, yet another variation on the LIRR scheme for the F/FA power packs. Looks good on this former F 7. |
