Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2015, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:  CN tank train passes the new signals, remnants of the old signals, and clears Medina Junction Rd. as it speeds northwest via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 23 Feb. '15. The new signals were activated within the past week or so. MoW crew came the next day and removed the last remnants of the old signals. Train had two locomotives, CN 2901 pulling and CN 2832 pushing.

Description:  Obviously this train crew did not heed this sign. I get a kick out of this sign and mail box at the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, as seen on 23 Feb. '15. This sign is a reminder of the grade crossing that was here before the W. Cecil St. overpass was built to cross the yard, it was opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07.

Title:  BNSF 5846 and CN 2860
Description:  CN through freight crosses the frozen Wolf River via the former SOO bridge as it heads southeast at Gills Landing, WI on 24 Feb. '15. The bridge was built as a swing bridge in 1894. A significant mechanical failure left the pivot inoperable from 2003 until the fall of 2011, when it was converted into a vertical lift bridge. According to bridgehunter.com, it “is likely the only vertical-lift bridge in the world with a center lift tower”.

Description:  CN through freight approaches River Rd. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails near Gills Landing, WI on 24 Feb. '15. Train was slowing to halt on the siding at Weyauwega. It was a chance encounter and I was in a hurry, otherwise I might have noticed the large shadow which was about to fall across the lead locomotive.

Description:  EAMX 2137, former CIC 2137 (in recognition of CRANDIC employee Robert J. Leeper), 3-bay cylindrical covered hopper was in the consist of a CN through freight paralleling Harrison St. as it headed northeast at the south end the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 26 Feb. '15. The Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway Co., the original owner of the car, is an interesting short line.

GTW 4928
Title:  GTW 4928
Description:  CN local crosses Millview Dr. with 13 cars as it approaches the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 Mar. '15. I don't know where the train had been working, but it was coming from the direction of Hilbert when I encountered it in Menasha a few minutes earlier. They are passing the partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant). Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The boxcar is passing under the remnants of the steam pipes that used to connect the energy plant to the Glatfelter Paper mill (formerly Bergstrom Paper, originally Winnebago Paper). The paper mill itself fell to the wrecking ball a few years ago, after occupying the site of this parking lot and several newer businesses out of frame to the right, for well over 125 years (the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874).

Description:  CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as it hauls 8 cars southwest via former SOO rails at Stroebe, WI on 3 Mar. '15. Train was heading back to Neenah after working in Shawano. The former C&NW rails are visible between the train and the road. There is a spur running into that open-sided structure behind the locomotive, but the current occupant, SERVPRO of Appleton, does not appear to receive rail service.

Description:  A trio of CN locomotives rest on a remnant of the former GB&W main line at Amherst Junction, WI on 7 Mar. '15. The bridge crosses Hwy. KK, which used to be U.S. 10. I am curious to learn why that many axles were halted there, on a truncated remnant of a former main line. I doubt they would devote that much horsepower to service Frontier-Servco FS, out of frame to the left.

Description:  CN local pulls 35 cars across the frozen Mud Creek via the former C&NW bridge in Town of Menasha, WI on 12 Mar. '15. The train was going to work Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The bridge was built by Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co., North Milwaukee, WI, in 1923. Some of the timber bents for the former SOO bridge, also in use by CN, are visible in the background.

Description:  CN local passes a halted container train on the west leg of the wye as it returns to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 12 Mar. '15. The local might have been returning from Shawano. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are on the other side of the train. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.
