Album Info:South Providence Yard and Providence Harbor on the Providence and Worcester Railroad. South Providence yard built by the Providence and Stonington Railroad in 1830 for use as their yard, station location and access to their steamboat pier. The successor to the Providence and Stonington, the New Haven and latter Penn Central continued to use that yard name until they also passed into history. In 2006/2007, South Providence Yard underwent a major renovation for storage and movement of grain ethanol from Aventine in the mid west as a fuel additive for (Shell) Motiva Enterprises. Adjacent to South Providence yard is Coastal Recycling with an unused spur. Across Allens Avenue at the Providence Port, active customers include Fields Terminal Building; Metals Recycling; Northern Pacific Lumber; Univar Chemicals and Waterson Terminal Services. Waterson, the operators of the Providence Port, is responsible for handling various minerals used in sandpaper products, along with coal from Africa, China and South America which are transported by the Providence and Worcester Railroad. Inactive customers in the Port area include Glens Falls Cement and Keyspan/National Grid the old Providence Gas Company.Company. Also included is the Cranston Yard that recent underwent a major renovation by Amtrak and the Providence and Worcester.
